Hot start issues

Unread postby Fasterthangas » Sat Jun 09, 2018 11:35 am

Hi all. I'm having hot start issues with my '95 Mustang GT. After attempting to tune with Quarterhorse and TunerPro; I gave up due to difficulties of learning all of the technical steps and such. I'm now at wits end and seeking help here to understand what is going on with the local tuners I've attempted to use. The current tune is via SCT. I realize this isn't a SCT forum, but I've received some great help here before.

The engine is a 347 with:
10:1 CR
230/238 @ .050
LU34A injectors
Lightning MAF
75mm TB
Systemax ll intake
AFR Renegade 185 heads

The issue that I'm having is hot start. The engine cranks but won't start unless I open the butterfly a tad or fully open. I then get black smoke out of the tailpipes. The last two SCT tuning shops claim that the engine is suffering from heatsoak and say that they cannot fix the issue. How the heck am I getting heatsoak with the injector placement of these cars? How does a Hellcat start when it's hot after sitting a bit? The Hellcat has a lot more HP than my little 347, although Dodge's computer is more advanced. Shouldn't my car fire right up after sitting just as a newer car does?

Full disclosure:
I'm in Phoenix and it's hot here. Lol.

Thanks for any guidance.

the software doesn't matter the ecu algorithms are the same

i think what they are referring to is vapor lock not exactly heat soak. Heat soak in itself isn't the issue. Most likely the cranking pw needs to be adjusted to get it to fire off hot. Its very odd you'd have hot start issues as hot starting is the least susceptible to being in range. It has to be off significantly for it not to crank warm.

There could be some other underlying issues that they are not aware of that could be causing the problems.

1st, it could be the ECT is dropping on startup due to wiring issues, thats a fairly often problem and will result in a much colder ccranking pw being used which could be difficult to get it to fire off.

Could be the lower voltage injector offset being too high causing it to dump fuel when the voltage drops on crank.

Could be that when the engine is shut off when hot that as it reduces rpm and and ignition the maf fluctuates as it common and causes it to dump fuel just before shutting off.

Could be a mix of those issues or more. Only way to see what the ecu is doing is to get a QH and plug in to it.

What's weird is that my engine never had this issue with previous tunes and Performer RPM 1 intake.
Is there a way that I could test the ECT wiring? Would there be other symptoms?
I do miss my QH and the ability to see what's going on.
Thanks Michael.

no, the only way to diagnose eec-iv is with a quarterhorse, no other possible way

yea np, the QH is cheap, only $250, simply plug it in and write a tune to it to see what its doing

I just discovered that if I do two prime cycles; the car fires right up after sitting at operating temps.
