Finally Happened - Dyno Story

Unread postby decipha » Sat May 05, 2018 2:42 am

Well everyone, after 12 years, 7 shops, 637-ish tunes and 3 dyno's it finally happened. I just had a driveshaft let loose on the dyno. And the stink of it is that I finished the tune earlier. The owner insisted on a dyno run video and that's when she let loose. Surprisingly the driveshaft safety loop took most of the brute force and no real damage done.

Car is a 67? fastback with 5.0 coyote swap and mt82 6spd w/ 9" rear and A/C :) She is an absolutely beaut. Driveshaft just wasn't up to the task.

Always a worry with our auto falcons when on our dyno.
Not sure if the actual shaft lefts go or the extension housing of the btr lets go due to the harmonics of the shaft.but ive seen pics of it and its not pretty

i hear ya, its the biggest concern i have on my harley truck as well. I have a 4r70w swap which makes the shaft longer and a custom 2 piece 4" shaft with hybrid 1350 front slip and 1480 rear diff flanges. Everytime I launch it I get weary of the 1350 letting loose being a heavy truck with over 1,000 ft lbs of torque and a 3800 stall I cringe just thinking about it. I do have a stifflers safety loop on it though so I do feel a little better about it after this incident.

Looks like you got off easy there, Decipha. I'm glad! Could have been a lot worse.
