ECU has an odd IC in it

Unread postby Severus » Fri Apr 27, 2018 6:55 am

Hello,
I recently purchased a new project car to work on and decided to try my hand at tuning. While I am not new to working of Fox Mustangs, this is my first time trying to tune the ECU. I bought a QuarterHorse and downloaded TunerPro RT and have been reading all the write ups to try and get a handle on the basics. When I pulled the ECU out of the foot well the first thing i noticed was that it had no identification stickers, they had been peeled off. When I opened the case, I found that what I assume was a logic controller had been replaced with a much newer small PCB and IC. Has anyone seen this before? I assume this is a re-manufactured A9L but I can't really find anything about it on the internet. The car was running OK, so I assume it will work the same as the original but I am curious about it. Pictures attached.

Car details:
92 GT
Stock 302 with shorty headers, offroad H-Pipe, B303 Cam, half-assed cold air
(This is a project car, I am building a new 306 to swap in)

That's an undocumented chip that moates sells off site. It works similar to a standard f3 chip, just needs a special flash cable. It replaces the internal rom chip so it's semi permanent chip install.

yea those are often used on re-manufactured ecu's when the rom goes bad. I ran across one once and inquired about it and found out craig was making them. On the chip I had it pushed the offset out 2k so it wouldn't accept a QH on the j3 port.

It's soldered onto the board so I'm not sure how "semi-permanent" it is. :) Can it be managed with a QuarterHorse just the same?

Ok, I will try to write a tune to it and if it errors out I'll just buy another A9L on eBay I suppose.

You can still use the quarterhorse as it bypasses the internal rom anyway. No need to buy a new ecu as yours is just fine. You will be able to read it out from the j3 port, but not write to it. You need a special cable to plug in directly to the chip itself.

With the QH connected key on results in the fuel pump running constantly so I have not attempted to start it. I'm going to pull the QH and see if it returns to normal but I don't think it's going to work with that ECU. I have serial flashers for ROM devices (I work in IT) but doing a direct binary write can be flaky at best. I still think the easiest option is to buy a genuine ECU (cost isn't really a problem) unless you guys have other suggestions.

The behavior is normal with the quarterhorse installed. If it's got a incorrect bin for the hardware, or a corrupt/missing bin it will cause the fuel pump to run constantly. Load an a9l.bin to the qh and try it again.

see 6 posts up ^^

your much better off upgrading to a 94-95 cbaza ecu, they can be had cheaper and are a significant upgrade to the older fox ecu's i have a swap write up on the homepage hich shows the 3 wires that need to be moved. In fact I just did one last week it took me all of 25 minutes from pulling the kick panel to putting it back in. Easy cheesy swap.

Thanks Decipha, any caveats to running the W4HO ecu with a 5 speed car? Your pin swap write up looks super easy, thanks for the advice.

nope in fact thats what i did with thst specific car actually, I usually like to save the auto ecus as they have more circuitry to run an auto trans and im liable to swap a 4R70w / 4r75w lol

but yea the auto ecus are always preferred

Awesome! Is the base tune on the swap write up page similar to the A9L2 with all your modifications in it already?

Sorry for 20 questions, I'm just trying to get my feet wet on this mostly stock engine before I swap in my new motor.

Thanks for your help. I am about to do the ECU swap, do you use a small pick or other tool to release the pins from the connector or just cut and solder the wires?

I got my new ECU today and it looks perfect. I was writing my base tune following your write up to modify the injector firing order and output ports. However, the swap write up also says:

You must:
DISABLE: ccd (optinal), fpm, am1, am2, canp, octane, smog, and thermactor (smog pump)

I searched the forum and found a few posts where you describe them as the computer controlled dwell, fuel pump monitor, and the rest I couldn't find. I also couldn't find the parameters searching for them by name/description as well as browsing. Is this still something I need to do or are they removed from the T4M2 tune?

Got the new ECU installed and running, it works correctly with QH now. I loaded in the base tune and set the idle, but I'm not getting any dash data. I searched the tune for "univ" as described and the results are "Error Enable Datalogging (Univ ADX) Patch Code" and "Disable Datalogging (Univ ADX)". I applied the first one. With the car running I can connect to the DA but nothing is displayed on the EEC-IV dash (all zeros).

Is the ADX in the file linked below still the best one to use?

The CBAZA adx has the WBo2 gauge on the dash but doesn't appear to have the predefined functions for the various types. I'm using on of the new AEMs (UEGO). What do I need to edit to get the right data logging setup?

yea that cbaza adx is severely outdated, i began adding the univ adx to cbaza but when i deleted the knock sensor code it forced open loop so never got back to it

simply edit your equation with the correct one given in the write up

Thanks man. Forgive my ignorance, but what parameter do I put that in?

Also since I have basically a stock engine in the car now that I don't plan to use very long, I am more than willing to work with you to test updates to the cbaza adx if you need a guinea pig.

in the write up it describes how to edit the equation, it would be the wbo2 value

nah no guinea needed i got my cbaza supercoupe and my cousins 95 gt that I store. The problem with cbaza is that it doesnt have any free rom so i have to delete code to add code. I got it all sorted just not any free time or need to finish it right now. Thanks for the offer though.
