Kess V2 - Discovery

Unread postby Pym » Thu Apr 12, 2018 12:10 pm

Following discussion with another french "fordiste", who will recognize himself,
I decide to try Kess V2 hardware on EEC V, to use it at it should be, without an insurance visible chip (in fact without unmounting it or cleaning its J3 port each time).

For information, I have tried many ODB diagnostic tools on my early ODB Fords (before 2000), specific ones, previous BMW ones,
without success until recently with a CardReader or an ELM327.
But I was not ready to do the same thing, on ECU readers/programmers, probably because their prices were different.

Kess V2 was supposed to work on one of my cars, it was enough, a low price Chinese copy will do the job.

Supported Ford cars can be found here http://blog.obdexpress.co.uk/2017/08/23/kess-v2-5-017-car-list-download-for-ford-ecu-programming/
For now I do not know if something can be added.

This is now discovery time.

First step, provided software installation and first ECU read.
IT WORKS. After something like 10 minutes reading, extracted binary is "identical" to the one coming from J3 port.
Size of the file is a bit different, probably banks order too, but result is as expected.
We have 2 different memory parts on EEC V, I suppose it reads the writable one.

Next steps, writing a binary and using the recovery option.
If you have already done it, just give your feedback.

Second step, writing an updated binary (copyright updated outside checksum scope is enough for testing).
I have done it on my ODB home made test bed, with an ECU which has totally no interest, that why I get it for nothing.
Nothing special, you have to follow procedure on software, provide binary, contact on - contact off - contact on and after 2 or 3 minutes it is done.
It could be interesting to understand why you need a 30 seconds contact off before reading or writing something.
Another 8 to 10 minutes to read the binary and to confirm it was well flashed, and IT IS.

I have tried recovery procedure, which requires to provide the original file, but without success,
because my test bed does not provide 12v when contact is off and software refuses to start it with 0v.
For reading or writing no issue, just for the recovery procedure.
Recovery seems for me exactly like the write mode, but it could do additional task, to be validated.

I have reflashed the original file, to confirm write/read without any issue.

Next steps, reading/writing a binary on a chipped ECU.

you cant write or read the memory with an external chip on the j3.

I have still not tried, any reason for it ? It should be the code that does it, in my idea, not a dedicated chip.

I think decipha is saying a j3 chip will control the MBUS while it is on the J3 port.

Unplug the J3 chip to allow kess or other tool to write the internal eec-v eprom.

I can now confirm that I am not able to read or write through ODB with a chip on j3 port.
I have access to some information about the binary, but not everything, like the serial number which is not provided in this case.

Test was just for fun, it really has not interest, but it is good to know.

Yes, as described previously, reading and writing EEC V ECUs without chip, works fine, and it does more.
I suppose that not all EEC V ECUs are supported, I am thinking about Visteon ECUs for example,
but the software is based on a list of cars, so it is pretty easy to know if yours will be.
The provided list is probably not up to date.
