Manual trans shifting made easier w/dashpot adj

Unread postby Shaker666 » Sat Apr 14, 2018 9:56 am

Not long ago, I swapped out the C6 auto in my '79 Bronco for a ZF 5-speed manual transmission. Driving the machine with the manual has been fun, but the transmission being as massive as it is (designed for duty behind diesel engines) doesn't like shifting at high RPM at all. It requires that the engine RPM be relatively low (around 1000 RPM or less) in order for a smooth shift to be possible. So I decided to adjust my dashpot decay rate via FN879. The decay rates I've been using are straight from the stock X3Z computer The low decay rates were fine, I just wanted the higher flow regions to decay much faster to facilitate the shifting issue. The mods make a huge difference! The RPM falls off much faster between shifts and I can actually drive the truck in a mildly sporty manner now.

yep as i put in bold in the dashpt write up

Dashpot is one of the most significant factors in creating a 'streetable' tune.

Yup, it works! Made the truck like 20x easier to drive.
