Harmonic Balancer

Unread postby Fasterthangas » Sat Nov 07, 2015 3:25 pm

What's the deal with a 11* and 10* balancer?

My pointer does not correspond with my unknown 28oz balancer. I guess there are two types of balancers with the timing marks in different spots.

I found TDC with a piston stop and remarked my balancer but I'm more curious than anything. My son had a balancer with timing marks in two different spots and on opposite sides of the balancer??

Timing scales on different places on the stock timing covers through the SBF years. I think my aftermarket balancer has three separate scales on it. I'm certain it has two minimum.

So the balancers are universal. Makes sense.

I'm looking for an inexpensive 280z balancer. I see some require a spacer to line up the belt pulley. I don't need SFI.

Yes, early 302s used a 28 balance that modern strokers use. They had timing marks in various arrangements. I have a Professional Products SFI. Not a fan of the brand but the balancer is very nice. Probably because of the SFI specs it has to meet.

I was considering a PP balancer. I had one on my truck and it was fine. Oddly enough; it was the sfi units that came apart on FE's.

Weird I have never had a balancer go bad on my own cars ever. I'm lucky, because it is common on a lot of engines. 5.0s definitely on that list. Anyway, real nice balancers are $250 or higher.

I think it would be wise to research at time of purchase. Some of those brands you just mentioned change suppliers as often as we change our oil. Ford Racing among them unfortunately.
