Question

Unread postby Holland375 » Thu Sep 10, 2015 8:46 pm

In my current set up I have a 383 based on a 351w, scat cranck and rods with probe Pistons, pro comp 220 heads and 11.5 compression, the car weighs 2300 and I have 4.11. Last time it dyno at 450 at the wheels. Would I have to drop compression too much to put a turbo? I want 750 at the wheels, and suggestions on rear end ratio? Currently I have to do most of my driving above 2000 rpm, that is okay doesn't bother me, what's your opinion?

dont fear the compression

youd need roughly 12 lbs of boost to make 750, Id recommend you push 15 and take a bit more timing out to make it safer and easier on the engine, id recommend tossing some meth injection on it too just for additional safety and you wont have anything to worry about

I take it your somewhere around 33 degrees now on premium pump gas? with 15lbs I'd shoot 16 degrees to it, thats VERY SAFE, and with the meth on it you can even turn it up to 20 degrees when you really need her to shine at the track and what not

leave the rear and see how you like it, u can always change it later if desired

So you don't think I should lower my compression?

all that work, im a firm believer in runnin what cha brung and makin thangs happen, excuses are for the weak

you could always swap the pistons afterward if you feel it becomes a concern, me personally, Id run it as-is, in all honesty, a turbo just increases cylinder pressure, basically doing the same thing high compression does but to a further extent

yea 80s would be ok, Id recommend using them with the base pressure kicked up to 55 psi for that extra headroom, no worries i do it all the time they function fine

you'll need a couple high pressure high flow pumps, 2x TRE 255 pumps would work fine

Thanks Michael, I will start saving and buying some of the parts like injectors and pumps. What would you recommend single or twin turbo ? Let's say with a budget of $3500.?
Currently I have an outside 255 high pressure pump, with one more intank I should be good correct?

single turbo, i like the borg warner/airwerks, check out paradise racing in florida they can probably get you a good deal on one, a t6 flanged 74mm+ would do the job no problem, no need in a race cover or none of that jazz either, journal bearing is fine

yea add another pump in-tank and run it to the regulator along side your current external pump, i usually mount the regulator in the rear of the car next to the tank so i can have a short return line and run only one line up to the rails, don't worry about a vac/boost reference line for the regulator you can compensate in the tune it'll be fine

Michael, how do you feel about a Paxton instead of a turbo?
The reason for is that I think the SC is easier to install, maybe a little less expensive or the same, but I don't want to mess with the way my car sounds right now. It is a stupid reason but it sounds mean, I am runing straight long tube headers to a 4 inch side exhaust. I pass emissions because my car is registered as a 1965 replica.
Now if you think I will be better off with the turbo, then I will go that route.

nothing wrong with a blower, make sure you get at a novi-2000 anything less than that is useless
