96 Ranger SVO

Unread postby decipha » Fri Dec 27, 2013 3:22 pm

I was trying to tune a 96 Ranger yesterday but kept having an issue with the exhaust manifold glowing cherry red at idle

I dumped 34 degrees in her at an 1100 rpm idle and she still went cherry red

AFAIK it appears to be an SVO setup out of a thunderbird complete with manifold and all, only difference from being bone stock is that its a 2.5 stroker with single plug heads and a little porting, and since he got the wrong 2.5 stroker crank he had to use the factory 96 2.3 block, has a set of dished autotec/racetec pistons we had cut, 60lb injectors and an 80mm mark8 maf, otherwise its a bone stock SVO engine

we're still using the stock 96 ecu and the dual coil plugs are wired in parallel to the coil

any thoughts on the glowing primaries are appreciated

BTW, this little engine is quite stout for being such a small displacement engine, im quite impressed on the performance with only 89 octane fuel at that

well we figured out the issue unfortunately it took out a rod in the process, live and learn, gratefully nothing else got hurt and the stock rods are cheap so after a new bushing, a lil polishing, and a new bearing, all is well

the culprit to these ignition issues are the dual coil setup, since we wired them in parallel we were getting some cross firing, so now we're looking for a new ecu with provisions for a single coil like most are but it has to be compatible with the single camshaft pickup which is rather different than ive seen on 6cyl and 8cyl fords

i tried using a cdan4 but that was a no go, apparently the cam sensor doesnt play well

Im open to any/all suggestions, it has to stay eec-v for the obd-II crap
and most importantly it has to support the single pulse cam pickup

Hopefully one year of the ranger had a single coil

Why do you think the cross firing caused the manifold problem? If it fires a cylinder that is later in the cycle, don't see why it would bother that cyl. Unless there was unburned fuel and it fired a cyl finishing it's power stroke?

the way the 96 ranger is setup theres 2 ignition coils for a total of 8 spark plug wires

the factory head has 8 plugs 2 per cylinder

the svo head has only 4 total 1 plug per cylinder

We tied both of the coil connectors together since we only have 1 coil to get the engine to run correctly otherwise it just doesnt run smooth when running on only one coil connector

the ecu appears to be alternately firing the coils or some kind of funky jazz cuz it just doesnt want to do right, but it only does it at some special times it seems

In any case it just isnt right so we will be replacing the ecu with something thats not designed for dual coil firing... hopefully

SVO/Turbocoupe/Merkur folks use the DIS on single-plug heads and just use a single coil pack. I think most of them use a PE or LAx EEC-IV when they do it, but if it's the same DIS system, I'd be a little surprised if you couldn't do the same thing. I'd check around on turboford.org and see if you can dig up some information there.

I was planning on doing the DIS conversion when I had my XR4Ti and never got around to it, but the conversion was pretty well sorted out and very few people ran the dual-plug head on turbo cars.

the 96 range uses edis with the 35 tooth reluctor and dual plug heads with dual coils

the engine has to stay edis because it has to stay OBD-II compliant

it does have the single plug svo heads on it pretty well ported as well

OK, that makes a lot more sense. For some reason I thought they switched away from the Lima before that. You could run 4 single coils instead of coil packs and be totally baller.

yep thats what i want to do but there still lies the issue with the cam sproket, im not sure how the ecu will play with that, imma take a look through cdan4 and see if i can figure out a way to get the single pickup cam sensor to play nice

Coil on plug would be preferred though

I thought the Lima cam sensors were like the Windsor cam sensors. If you can't get that one to work, couldn't you machine a wheel to fit behind the aux shaft pulley or cam pulley and mount a sensor that will work with what you need?

Yeah, it'd be a hell of a lot easier swapping to a different ECU. :)

One thing I will caution you about is that the later Lima blocks suffer from core shift and the front of #1 can be pretty thin. I don't know exactly when that started happening. I know for sure it was when they switched to the small journal cranks. One of my friends cracked the cylinder wall at 450 whp on a 2.5 stroker.

for cam sensor you can use a 94 california cam syncronizer or you can bolt the stock cam sensor on the valve cover to read the cam gear.

for coil i was almost positive that both coils fired at the same time and that you could just run one of them and disconnect the other. i could be wrong though.. i assume the newer crank sensor is on it too?

the engine was already together and running

We reused all the stock 96 stuff with no issues

we tried running with only 1 coil connector but the engine wasnt happy

We tied both the connectors together in parallel and thats when it threw a rod (cross fired) as soon as we loaded the engine

with only one connector hooked up the engine doesnt seem as responsive as when both are connected

As soon as the engine gets dropped back in imma see if i can figure out the coils

It could be done, but just like pre 98 4.6/5.4L mod motors you would have to wire them in series instead of firing them independently. I'm pretty sure there are guys over on turborangerforum that have run the single plug head with the obd2 ecu so ill see what i can dig up for you

my buddy ran this and said he just ran one coil pack and it ran perfectly fine. how are you running the crank and cam sensors?

it should run fine with just one coil.. everyone that ive talked to that ran a single plug head said that is how they did it.. they just unplugged the 2nd coil
